Irvine

October 02, 2000|Deniene Husted, (714) 520-2508

Mayor Christina Shea will travel this month to Taoyuan City, Taiwan, to solidify ties with the newest of Irvine's three sister cities.

The City Council adopted Taoyuan City as its third sister city in July, after Taoyuan Mayor Chong-Yi Chen visited Irvine in August 1999 to discuss a formal partnership between the two municipalities.

Irvine's other sister cities are Tsukuba, Japan (since 1989), and Hermosillo, Mexico (since 1990).

Shea's five-day trip to Taoyuan will begin Oct. 20, and cost the city about $1,200 for lodging and meals. Air fare will be provided through the Taoyuan Sister City Formation Committee of the Irvine Sister Cities Foundation.
