Habitat for Humanity Plans Home in City

October 06, 2000|GAIL DAVIS

Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County moved a step closer to building its first home in Santa Paula, when the city agreed this week to sell the organization a small plot on Oak Street for $1.

The nonprofit group builds homes for low-income families willing to put "sweat equity" into each project--donated labor.

Habitat has built houses in other Ventura County communities, but its only work in Santa Paula has been to repair a roof, said Elden Sandy, construction coordinator.

The proposed home would be 1,089 square feet, two stories with three bedrooms and two baths, along with a 502-square-foot attached garage, Sandy said. The house would take up most of the tiny lot.

As on other Habitat for Humanity projects, most of the labor would be donated, and the group hopes to get much of the materials donated.

The organization plans to sell the house for $63,000 to a family to be selected in about three months, Sandy said.
