Two-time champion Ellen Port and defending champion Alissa Herron advanced to the second round of match play in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach.
Herron, of Wayzata, Minn., beat Angela King of Westminster, Colo., 3 and 2, and Port, of St. Louis, defeated Tanna Richard of Fort Smith, Ark., 4 and 3.
Port, the 1995 and 1996 winner in the tournament for players age 25 and over, led qualifying with a 3-over 147 total.
Marianne Towersey of Newport Beach defeated Jennifer Cole of Escondido, 3 and 2, to advance. Olivia Slutzky of San Juan Capistrano and Teri Goolsby of Garden Grove were eliminated. Slutzky lost to Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga., 5-3. Goolsby lost to Sally Krueger of San Francisco, 3 and 2.
