Grant Funds to Aid Police Department

October 07, 2000|IRENE GARCIA

A federally funded local law enforcement block grant of $49,860 was awarded to the city this week to help improve public safety.

The program, established by the federal departments of Commerce, Justice and State, awards funds annually to help communities reduce crime.

"We're very excited," said San Fernando City Administrator John Ornelas. "We applied about eight months ago and it was a very lengthy application process."

The money will be used to improve and enhance the city's Police Department, Ornelas said.

"It will allow us to put in additional civilian personnel and swear in a number of officers engaged in community policing," he said.

Currently the San Fernando Police Department has 58 full-time employees, including civilian personnel.
