1st Quarter

Arizona: 21

USC: 0

THE SCORING: * Arizona 7, USC 0: Wade, 75-yard pass from Jenkins at 14:33. 80-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Keel (kick).

* Arizona 14, USC, 0: Jenkins, 1-yard run at 6:59. 28-yard drive, 5 plays. Key gain--Marshall, 26-yard reverse pass from Leonard from the USC 28. PAT--Keel (kick).

* Arizona 21, USC 0: Farmer, 80-yard run at 1:08. 80-yard drive, 1 play. PAT--Keel (kick).

TURNING POINT: USC had a chance to score on its third possession, trailing, 14-0, after Nickels' 5-yard pass from Palmer on third and three from the USC 36 set up a Trojan first down. Colbert's 32-yard reception on the next play put the Trojans at the Arizona 27, but back-to-back sacks on Palmer followed by a missed 42-yard field goal by Newbury ended the drive. Arizona scored again two possessions later.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Wade's 75-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins is a career long for both. It is also the longest pass play against USC since UCLA's J.J. Stokes scored on a 90-yard pass from John Barnes in 1992. Jenkins called off the kicking team on Arizona's second touchdown on fourth and goal. Instead he ran it in on a bootleg play.

STAT WATCH: Arizona outgained USC, 188-93, in total yardage, including 82-6 rushing. Farmer had 90 yards on six carries. McCullough was the Trojans' leading rusher with 11 yards on six carries. Palmer completed five of 10 passes for 87 yards.

TURNING POINT: USC missed two opportunities to score. First, after starting at the Arizona 45 on its second possession, USC yielded back-to-back sacks on Palmer for minus-11 yards and was forced to punt at the Arizona 30. On the Trojans' next possession, Newbury missed a 35-yard field goal. USC scored on the next drive following Hill's interception.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Arizona Coach Dick Tomey said Arizona flattened out in the second quarter. Papadakis' touchdown was the first touchdown yielded by the Wildcats since the third quarter of the Arizona-Ohio State game on Sept. 9--nearly an 11-quarter span.

STAT WATCH: McCullough averaged 1 yard a carry. Palmer completed five of nine passes for 75 yards. Arizona added only three yards rushing. USC finished the second quarter with minus-1 yard rushing.

TURNING POINT: After the Trojans' field goal, Deshaun Hill sacked Jenkins for an 11-yard loss on second and four from the USC 44. Arizona did not get a first down and punted. On the Trojans' next possession, Palmer scrambled for six yards on second and 10 before Idris Haroon forced and recovered a fumble at the USC 19. USC went three and out on its next two series.
