Checklist: Your Benefits

October 13, 2000|LIZ PULLIAM WESTON

Things to do this weekend with your money

It's open-enrollment season for employee benefits. Last week's checklist included items on reviewing health coverage and using a tax-saver plan. Here are other coverages to consider:

* Today: Review your life insurance coverage. To determine whether you have enough life insurance, visit the tutorial at http://www.latimes.com/insure101. To compare prices, visit one of the many Internet quotation services such as

http://www.insuremarket.com, http://www.insweb.com or http://www.quotesmith.com. Younger, healthy workers may be able to find an individual policy for less than employer-provided coverage would cost.

* Saturday: Consider adding disability coverage if your employer offers it. For more information, read Silver Lake Publishing's "How to Insure Your Income" ($12.95). If you're interested in long-term care insurance, United Seniors Health Cooperative, at (202) 479-6615 or http://ushc-online.org, offers a 100-page guide, "Long-Term Care Planning: A Dollar & Sense Guide," for $18.50.

* Sunday: Your company might have a slew of other benefits, from low-priced movie passes to scholarships to rebates for using public transportation. Review your employee handbook or contact your company's human resources department Monday to make sure you're getting all the perks to which you're entitled.
