Woodbridge Is Defensive in Victory

October 14, 2000|BRETT MEADE | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Woodbridge High managed a 10-0 victory over Laguna Hills in a defensive battle to open Sea View League play Friday night at Mission Viejo High.

The Warriors (3-3, 1-0) managed only 94 yards of total offense but came up with some big plays when they needed to.

The Woodbridge defense controlled the line of scrimmage all night. Laguna Hills was held to 25 yards rushing.

"Our team played with a lot of heart and emotion tonight," Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. "That's the difference in the game."

Gibson said his team was upset about the timing of the game.

"We didn't like that they scheduled us on their homecoming," he said.

The kicking game dominated most of the play. The teams traded punts on the first six possessions of the game before Woodbridge put together a 41-yard drive that was capped by Jason Ellis' 37-yard field goal.

After punts ended the next possession for each team, Laguna Hills (3-3, 0-1) had a chance to tie the score before halftime, but missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt as time expired.

The second half began with the Hawks being forced to punt from their 38-yard line. Woodbridge put on a big rush, and Chris White blocked the punt and it was recovered at the Laguna Hills 20 by the Warriors. Five plays later, sophomore quarterback Tim Kegel connected with Shaun Smith on a two-yard touchdown pass play.

Kegel completed seven of 13 passes and Smith had four receptions for 10 yards. Laguna Hills quarterback Chris Johnson completed 13 of 30 passes for 126 yards with one interception.
