Sutherland, Garden Grove Stop Los Amigos

October 14, 2000|ADAM DODGE

Leo Sutherland completed nine of 11 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown Friday, helping Garden Grove to a 21-7 victory over Los Amigos in a Garden Grove League game at Garden Grove High School.

Sutherland completed his first six passes, one of them a 35-yard touchdown to Felipe Garcia in the second quarter that gave the Argonauts (2-3-1, 2-1 in league play) a 7-0 halftime lead.

The Garden Grove defense was impressive, holding Los Amigos to two first downs in the first half. Linebacker Ben Meza had four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Running back Sione Taumoefolau ignited the Argonaut offense in the third quarter, breaking several tackles on a 24-yard run to the Lobo three-yard line. Taumoefolau scored on the next play to give Garden Grove a 14-0 lead.

Los Amigos (1-4-1, 0-1-1) came back in the fourth quarter, on Sam Islas' eight-yard touchdown run with 5:50 to play. But Taumoefolau scored on a one-yard run to make it 21-7, and the Lobos went three and out on their final possession.

Garden Grove's Garcia caught four passes for 78 yards and intercepted a pass on defense.

"I was pleased with the effort," Garden Grove Coach Kris Van Hook said. "We were able to run and pass the ball effectively and the defense did a great job."
