Crews Battle Slow-Moving Brush Fire Near La Conchita

October 17, 2000

VENTURA — A slow-moving brush fire was burning Monday night in a canyon north of Ventura, the second such blaze of the day in the county.

The blaze started about 6 p.m. on state land off Padre Juan Canyon Road south of La Conchita off the Ventura Freeway, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

A cause had not been determined as of late Monday.

More than 20 acres had burned and there was no containment as of 10 p.m. Monday, authorities said. More than 50 firefighters, along with hand crews, were fighting the blaze, authorities said.

A water-dropping helicopter was able to make a drop shortly before darkness grounded aircraft. Fire dispatchers said the terrain was rugged but that the blaze was accessible by a road.

A second brush fire erupted about 5:15 p.m. Monday in the 17000 block of South Mountain Road in Santa Paula but it was limited to a half-acre and doused within 30 minutes by firefighters.
