Cooley, Garcetti to Hold Televised Debate Tonight

October 19, 2000

LOS ANGELES — The two candidates for Los Angeles County district attorney will hold an hourlong televised debate on KCAL-TV Channel 9 at 8 tonight.

The debate will be the 12th of the campaign so far for Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti and his challenger, Deputy Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley. Cooley and Garcetti have two more debates planned, on KPPC-FM (89.3) on Wednesday and KCET-TV Channel 28 on Nov. 2.

The two have clashed repeatedly on issues, including enforcement of the three-strikes law and Garcetti's prosecution of alleged crimes by police officers in the Rampart Division anti-gang unit. Cooley has led in early polls, but Garcetti has a far bigger campaign treasury to spend on advertising, and is expected to begin a barrage of TV commercials soon.
