Sub Fleet Recalled for Safety Checks

October 22, 2000|From Times Wire Reports

The Royal Navy said it is recalling its entire fleet of "hunter killer" nuclear submarines for safety checks. The decision to dock the fleet came four months after the Trafalgar class submarine Tireless developed a leak in its nuclear reactor cooling system and had to be towed from the Mediterranean. A problem with a weld in the system appeared to have caused the leak. Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Jim Jenkin said all 12 submarines in the Trafalgar and Swiftsure classes, which are nuclear-powered but conventionally armed, would be checked.
