Marmonte Just a Sack Race

October 25, 2000|MIKE BRESNAHAN

Another Marmonte League team, another sack attack.

Little more than a month after Westlake High blitzed Hart for 11 sacks, Royal buried Newbury Park with 10 sacks Friday night.

The Highlanders forced three turnovers, allowed only 204 yards and created constant chaos in a surprisingly easy 47-7 victory.

Dave Lemos, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound defensive tackle, set a school record with six sacks.

A catcher on the baseball team, Lemos didn't raise many eyebrows with his performance.

"It's not a surprise to us," Royal Coach Gene Uebelhardt said. "We expected him to play well when the season began and he has."

Royal (5-2, 2-1 in league play) hosts Westlake (6-1, 3-0) in a battle for first place in league on Friday.

With 361 yards last week against San Marcos, Tyler Ebell of Ventura moved into seventh place in the region in career rushing yards.

Ebell has 5,276 yards and is 360 yards from sixth place, held by Jermaine Lewis, former Antelope Valley running back now with UCLA.

Manuel White, former Valencia running back also at UCLA, leads the all-time region list with 6,745 yards.

Behind White is George Keiaho (6,615 yards), former Buena running back, whose brother, Freddy, is a senior at Buena.

In the 10th spot is Paraclete junior Curtis Brown, who has rushed for 4,768 yards.

Ebell is 611 yards from tying DeShaun Foster, former Tustin running back, for 10th on the all-time state list.
