Suspect Arrested in Man's Stabbing

October 26, 2000|RICHARD FAUSSET

A 33-year-old homeless man was stabbed just after midnight Wednesday as he sat on a Glendale bus bench, authorities said. His alleged attacker was arrested nearby.

James Young was at Glendale Avenue and East Windsor Road when he was approached by a man, Glendale police said.

The man spoke to Young in Spanish, which the victim did not understand, and then stabbed Young once, puncturing his lung and stomach, police said.

Young called police from a nearby pay phone. When officers arrived, they found Young bleeding severely.

Officers arrested Jose Fercano, 22, of Highland Park a few blocks away. Young identified Fercano as his attacker before the injured man was taken by ambulance to Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, said Burbank Police Sgt. Rick Young, who is not related to the victim.

Young was reported in stable condition, hospital officials said.

A knife was found near the scene, Sgt. Young said.

Fercano was charged with attempted murder and is in custody at Glendale City Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Glendale Municipal Court.

Police are uncertain of the motive for the attack.
