October 28, 2000

Retired postal clerk Max A. Abbiatti, a 64-year Ventura County resident, died Wednesday in Santa Paula after a brief illness. He was 83.

He was born Jan. 16, 1917, in West Plains, Mo., and moved to Ventura County about 1936.

Abbiatti met Nova Skaggs, a Santa Paula resident, and the couple married on Aug. 8, 1940. Two years later, he began three years of service in World War II in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific theater.

He was a postal clerk in Santa Paula for 21 years before retiring. He was also a member of the Westside Baptist Church.

Abbiatti's wife said he enjoyed fishing in lakes. Every month, the couple went camping and fishing at Lake Cachuma.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by their son Marlin, their daughter Maxine Wiley and six grandchildren, all of Santa Paula.

Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m. on Monday at Santa Paula Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Bevel officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Abbiatti's memory may be made to the Westside Baptist Church building fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula.
