JERUSALEM — The chief Israeli army commander in the West Bank and the leader of an elite undercover unit submitted their resignations over a botched attempt to capture a top Islamic militant, the army said Thursday.
An army investigation concluded that the three Israeli soldiers killed in the Saturday raid, and a fourth who was wounded, were all hit by "friendly fire."
The Hamas militant, Mahmoud abu Hunoud, fled and later surrendered to Palestinian security forces.
The raid in the West Bank village of Assira Shamaliya was carried out by the elite Duvdevan unit.
The commander of Israel's West Bank forces, Brig. Gen. Shlomo Oren, and the leader of Duvdevan, identified only as Lt. Col. Micky, submitted their resignations, the army said.
