Grant to Aid 7 Elementary Schools

September 02, 2000|ANNA GORMAN

Equipped with a $250,000 grant from Kinko's, UC Santa Barbara and the Oxnard Elementary School District are teaming up to improve achievement at seven of the district's campuses.

Through the Effective Schools program, about 5,000 students will receive academic support and guidance over three and five years. During that time, students will be matched with mentors from local businesses, community organizations and local colleges.

Teachers will work with experts at the Gevirtz Research Center of UCSB's Graduate School of Education to raise standards in the selected schools. As a team, they will collect and analyze student data, develop lesson goals, prepare teaching materials and evaluate students' progress.

"They are looking at their whole curriculum, how they are teaching and what their expectations are for students," said Vishna Harrity, executive director of the research center. " And they are going to be able to know when to make changes. The partnership stands an excellent chance for improving achievement."

The participating campuses in Oxnard are Brekke, Chavez, Elm Street, Kamala, McKinna, Ramona and Rose Avenue elementary schools.
