VENTURA COUNTY ROUNDUP | Oxnard

Volunteers Sought for Beach Cleanup

September 02, 2000|JENIFER RAGLAND

Organizers for a local celebration of California Coastal Cleanup Day, set for Sept. 16, are seeking volunteers to help clear trash and debris from Ventura County beaches, harbors and inland waterways.

Last year, more than 45,000 coastal cleanup volunteers collected 700,000 pounds of trash and recyclables--including 310,000 cigarette butts--from California shorelines. More than 72% of the debris on the state's beaches is made of plastic, which takes hundreds of years to break down in the environment.

Cleanups will take place statewide from 9 a.m. to noon at more than 600 sites around the state on beaches, bays, rivers, creeks and parks.

Those interested in volunteering at Oxnard Shores Beach should arrive at 8:30 a.m. for orientation and refreshments at the basketball court on Neptune Square off Mandalay Beach Road.

Volunteers should wear sunscreen, sturdy shoes, a hat and heavy gloves. For more information, call (805) 654-3179.

All who participate will receive a bag full of goodies, including a coupon for a free water filtration bottle.
