Power Failure Affects Atwater-Glendale Area

September 07, 2000

LOS ANGELES — A conductor failure was blamed Wednesday night for a power failure that knocked out electricity to 900 homes and businesses for hours in the Atwater-Glendale area, Department of Water and Power officials said.

The power failure began at 7:44 p.m. and disabled traffic signals throughout the region bordered by Goodwin Avenue on the north, Alger Street on the east, the Golden State Freeway on the west and Los Feliz Boulevard on the south.

DWP spokeswoman Lisa Tashiro said a detailed cause of the "fairly large outage" was under investigation. No one was injured, she said.

Customers who dropped into one fast-food restaurant expecting to have their requests tapped into a computer and then served up seconds later, had to wait 20 minutes while orders were handwritten.

The Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division dispatched extra patrols during the power failure to discourage any looting and ensure safety.
