Police Chief Ronald E. Lowenberg received the 2000 Spurgeon Award from the Boy Scouts of America, Orange Council, on Thursday in appreciation of his public service.

Lowenberg was honored along with Orange County Fire Authority Chief Chip Prather during a luncheon.

Scout council officials said Lowenberg and Prather have shown extraordinary enthusiasm for public service and are outstanding leaders in the county. Their efforts and support of Scouting have also had a positive effect in their communities, council members said.

The Spurgeon Award is named after William Spurgeon III, an Irvine Co. executive whose interest in the Explorer Scout program bolstered its membership to more than 325,000 today.
