VALLEY / VENTURA COUNTY SPORTS | 2000 PREVIEW: TEAM
CAPSULES

High Desert League

September 08, 2000

OUTLOOK

Two-time defending champion Rosamond figures to again be the class of the league, with Bishop and Kern Valley challenging. Mojave and Desert each began last season 7-0 and can't be discounted. It would be a major accomplishment if Vasquez or Frazier Mountain, both under first-year coaches, can earn a playoff spot.

SCOUTING REPORT

FRAZIER MOUNTAIN

Jason Fayter, First year

* Coming back: LB Matt Simon is a three-year starter. Sr. K Jason Tompkins has received a lot of attention from college recruiters. TE-DE Adam Angel is expected to be a force on both sides of the ball. Checking in: FB-DL Bryce Van (6-3, 210) will start after transferring from Hart, where he was on the golf team. TB-OLB Alex Cook, a standout on the soccer team, will get most of the carries. Jr. Adam Reyna, in his first season at QB, looked promising in summer league.

VASQUEZ

Doug Miller, First year

* Coming back: The Mustangs are young, but have experience on the lines with DE-OT Richard Lopez, DT-OL Greg Landis and OL-LB Clovis Scott. RB-DB John Tosto will lend experience to the backfields. Checking in: Sr. Jay Wilson will start at RB after transferring from Valencia. QB-S Lucas Spigno will start after sitting out last season. WR-DBs Mark Arrietta and Tony Uedelhardt, up from the junior varsity, will be keys.
