Sylmar Tricks Dorsey, 28-18

September 09, 2000|MITCH POLIN

Coach Jeff Engilman and Sylmar High were up to old tricks again Friday night.

Sylmar running back Isidro Medina moved to right guard and ran nine yards for a touchdown on a fumblerooski play in the final minutes of the Spartans' 28-18 victory over Dorsey in the opener for both teams.

"I have to give Bill Redell the credit for that one," Engilman said. "He's the one who showed us how to use that."

The Spartans, which benefited from four Dorsey turnovers, struggled on offense most of the night, finishing with only 153 total yards.

Dorsey, which reached the City Championship semifinals last season, led only once, 18-14, on a seven-yard run by Melvin Pettis with 6:17 remaining.

But Sylmar responded with an 83-yard return for a touchdown by Terrell Massey on the ensuing kickoff to reclaim the lead.

Quarterback John Valdez completed five of 11 passes for only 13 yards, but rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown in 15 carries.
