The Kids' Reading Room | Reading by 9

September 10, 2000

Kids, we asked you to share your tips for doing well in school.

* Maybe you can try my secret. If you don't know the answer to something, skip it and do it last.

--Reeti, John Muir

Elementary, Glendale

* Whenever you have a new subject, like fractions (I'm really bad at fractions), you go and study more on them so when you go back to school they will be easy. Shhh! Keep it down or they'll hear the secret.

--Farihah, 9, Marjorie

Veeh Elementary, Tustin

* My secret for doing well in school is listening to the teacher when she is doing something important like blending phonics or doing math. My other secret is turning off the TV when I am doing my homework so I can concentrate better.

--Brenda, 7, Bassett Street

Elementary, Los Angeles

* I think students should listen to their teacher and ignore people who are bothering them. Students need to concentrate on their work.

--Omar, Anaheim

* My special secrets are: If you believe you can do it, you can; one person can make a difference--a team can make a miracle; the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step.

--Catherine, 10, Oxnard

Street Elementary, Van Nuys

* I listen to my teachers. I follow instructions and know what I need to do. I get my homework out. Next thing I know I've got a cool grade.

--Ali, 10,

Woodmont Elementary,

Des Moines, Wash.
