THE LATIN GRAMMY AWARDS

Prediction

September 12, 2000|ERNESTO LECHNER

Art and commerce clash head on here, giving voters an opportunity to either sell their souls by rewarding the most superficial aspects of Latin music (Martin, Marc Anthony), or give an important message by rightfully picking those quality artists who expand the boundaries of the genre (Vives, Blades). Rewarding Vives would be particularly symbolic, since the Colombian artist's infectious blend of vallenato pop has struck that enviable balance between popular acceptance and artistic excellence. Still, voters might be dazzled by Anthony's charismatic persona.
