Wood Is Good

September 13, 2000

The calendar says fall is just nine days away, but don't tell that to the 190-plus members of the Southern California Woodie Club.

In their endless summer, the surf is always up, tropical garb is never out of fashion, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones are blaring from the speakers, and, indeed, the coolest rides around are 1920s through '50s wood-bodied cars and trucks.

The club is dedicated to promoting the historical value of woodies, especially their place as the wheels of choice in the California surfing culture. Annual dues are $25, and members receive a quarterly newsletter.

The club will be out in force at this weekend's Wavecrest meet organized by David Doherty and other San Diego-area members for the parent National Woodies Club. More than 240 woodies are expected to take part in the event, billed as the world's largest such meet, at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, 15 miles north of San Diego.

The meet runs from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday; an auction of memorabilia will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Encinitas Best Western Inn. Information: (760) 723-9833 or (760) 728-1616.
