Kuwait Has Surprise for Czech Republic

September 17, 2000

Kuwait stunned the Czech Republic, 3-2, at Brisbane to put itself in prime position to advance to the second round.

The victory gave Kuwait three points in Pool C. Cameroon leads with four points, the United States has two and the Czechs one. A victory or a tie with the United States Tuesday could move Kuwait into the elimination round.

The Czechs took the lead one minute into the match on a goal by Marek Heinz, but Khalaf Almutairi tied it in the 56th minute, and Faraj Saied scored twice within nine minutes in the second half to give Kuwait a 3-1 edge.

Italy 3, Honduras 1--Italy clinched a place in the second round with its victory at Adelaide. The victory gave Italy six points in Pool A. Nigeria has four, Honduras one and Australia none. All the scoring came in the first 28 minutes. Gianni Comandini scored twice as Italy built a 3-0 lead, and then he inadvertently netted Honduras' goal in the 28th minute when he sent a corner kick by Julio Leon into the Italian net.

Nigeria 3, Australia 2--Australia was eliminated from medals contention with the loss to the Olympic defending champions at Sydney.
