Mark Hopkins Gets an Updated Look

September 17, 2000

San Francisco's landmark, 73-year-old Mark Hopkins Inter-Continental Hotel this month expects to finish most of a $57-million, top-to-bottom project that has refurbished its nearly 400 rooms (including new high-speed Internet access) and the lobby. By Sept. 25, all rooms should be reopened, according to spokeswoman Maria Kuhn.

Still to be finished: expansion of the fitness area, reconfiguration of banquet rooms and redecorating the Nob Hill Restaurant. These areas will be closed for various periods starting in October, Kuhn said.

The Top of the Mark lounge, known for its panoramic city view, has been untouched, having been renovated in 1996; the hotel exterior has been cleaned but not altered due to its landmark status. Guests' bills have already gotten a little addition this month, when published rates rose from $280 to $350 for the cheapest room, Kuhn said. Telephone (800) 662-4455.
