Suspect in Lori Gonzalez Case Enters Pleas

September 22, 2000

LOS ANGELES — The man accused of killing Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard Parks' granddaughter pleaded not guilty Thursday to eight unrelated counts of attempted murder.

Samuel Sharad Shabazz, 18, of Los Angeles was charged with the counts in connection with three separate incidents in 1998.

The district attorney's office originally filed the counts in December 1999, but the charges were dismissed three weeks before Parks' granddaughter, Lori Gonzalez, was killed. The charges were recently refiled.

The preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 16--the same day Shabazz must return to court to schedule the preliminary hearing for the Gonzalez killing.

Shabazz has been charged in the May 28 shooting death of Gonzalez. Los Angeles police believe Gonzalez's male companion, a member of a gang and an alleged rival of Shabazz's, was the intended target.
