Contractors who work in the city are now required to sign a written contract before starting work, certifying that debris from their construction site will not be washed into the city's storm drain system.

The City Council unanimously approved requiring a written certification from each contractor at a meeting last week.

"Now they can't say they didn't know about the regulations," said Councilwoman Toni Iseman, who proposed the agenda item.

Debris could include cement, paint, sawdust, solvent or trash.
