September 26, 2000|From Times Wire Reports

A man purportedly angry about persistent jokes linking him to the gay community was charged with first-degree murder in Roanoke, Va., in the death of a man in a gay bar and the injuring of six others. According to police, the alleged gunman, Ronald Edward Gay, 54, admitted to the shootings shortly after the attack. He was being held without bond on the murder charge and could face additional charges after a hearing in October. "He stated he came from a [gay] bar and blew them away," Roanoke Police Lt. William Althoff said.
