A Ugandan swimmer has been granted bail by a Sydney court on a charge of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Joe Atuhaire, 22, left the Olympic athletes' village Friday after police issued a warrant for his arrest. He was detained in Adelaide.

Making his first appearance in court Monday after being returned to Sydney, Atuhaire was granted bail of $11,000 (U.S.) pending a hearing Oct. 19. He has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent against a 17-year-old girl in Sydney's western suburb of Lidcombe, near the athletes' village.

The International Olympic Committee will begin visiting candidate cities for the 2008 Summer Games starting with Beijing in February.

The IOC Evaluation Committee will visit Beijing, Toronto, Istanbul, Paris and Osaka, Japan, between Feb. 20 and April 1.

This is the first selection process since the bribery scandal that surrounded the awarding of the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City caused the IOC to alter the procedure.
