Mental Illness Group to Sponsor Vigil

September 27, 2000|MATT SURMAN

Joining a nationwide effort, the Ventura County chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will hold a candlelight vigil and walk Sunday to spotlight Mental Illness Awareness Week.

The walk will begin at 6:45 p.m. in front of City Hall, next to the Father Serra statue at the top of California Street.

Similar vigils sponsored by the alliance have been held nationwide for the past 18 years to increase awareness of mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

In addition to the walk, an awards dinner will be held the following day to honor a community member, a mental health professional and a mental health client.

Entertainment will be provided by the Mental Health Players and by songwriter Brian Vinson.

The dinner is scheduled for the Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Road, in Ventura from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The price is $17.

For reservations for the dinner, call 652-0596.
