September 28, 2000|NANCY FORREST-YOSNOW

Buena High School has received a $5,000 grant aimed at improving access to science programs for students at risk of falling behind academically.

The New Era Award for Excellence grant from Edison International will help fund the program, which was recognized by the Ventura Unified School District board during its meeting Tuesday.

Buena High science teacher Richard Smith, who applied for the grant, was presented with the award by Edison public affairs officer Nancy Williams at the meeting.

The grant will be used to develop a program, Greater Resources for Academic Success Project, Principal Mike Johnson said.

Under the program, students will learn science through hands-on activities. They will also learn practical ways to use science in specific jobs as they prepare to enter the work force, Johnson said.

"This project will increase the ability for at-risk students to work at their own pace, receive immediate feedback and increase motivation by connecting classroom instruction with jobs and career options available in the local community," he said.
