La Habra 34, Northwood 0

September 29, 2000|JOEL BEERS

La Habra Coach Frank Mazzotta called it "the most bizarre thing I'd ever seen." He was referring to a 76-yard touchdown run by La Habra punter Jonathan Tapia in the third quarter.

Tapia, who also is a wide receiver and defensive back, was going to punt with his team holding a tenuous 7-0 lead. But the snap was low and bounced off his fingertips. After a frantic scramble, he picked up the ball and started running.

Several missed tackles, a few eluded defenders and 76 yards later, Tapia was in the end zone and La Habra had a 13-0 lead. The play sparked the Highlanders to three more touchdowns in the quarter.
