College Seeking Director-Curator for Art Gallery

April 04, 2001|VIVIAN LETRAN | TIMES STAFF WRITER

In an effort to fill an art gallery director-curator seat by May, Saddleback College in Mission Viejo has posted an ad for the position with a higher salary and full benefits.

The salary, which is for a 30-hour workweek, ranges from $2,359 to $3,010 a month for a 10-month period. The candidate will be responsible for curating and installing exhibitions.

The art gallery has not produced in-house shows for two years, since former director Karen McGuire left in January 1999. The college hired a guest curator for a student show.

Established in 1978, the 1,600-square-foot Saddleback College Art Gallery has focused on folk, contemporary and historical art shows. Two exhibits used to be held in the fall, and three were scheduled in the spring semester.

Art department officials said they want to extend the schedule into the summer.

Past exhibits include works by Stephen De Staebler lent by the San Francisco Museum of Art and an African mask display from UCLA.

The college art department, which runs the gallery, recently received $600,000 from a donor. A remodeling and expansion of the art gallery is tentatively scheduled for this summer.

The closing date for applications for the director-curator post is April 27. For more information, call (949) 582-4850.
