Fuel Tank Blamed in Thai Jet Explosion

World IN BRIEF / THAILAND

April 13, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

U.S. investigators say an exploding fuel tank apparently caused the fire aboard a Thai Airways Boeing 737, the same problem suspected in the fatal crash of TWA Flight 800.

A flight attendant was killed and the plane was destroyed in the March 3 blast in Bangkok minutes before Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was to board.

A report released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board said the plane's center tank exploded. It is near air-conditioning packs, which generate heat.
