Annoyed in Zihuatanejo

April 29, 2001

Regarding "Rising Above It All in Zihuatanejo" (April 8): We too stayed at the Hotel Irma in that Mexican coastal town, and we agree with writer Christopher Reynolds that although the view was wonderful, the amenities left a lot to be desired (noisy air conditioner, six flights of stairs to our room, etc.).

However, even for all the town's charm and laid-back atmosphere, we came away from our five days there with negative feelings. You couldn't walk down the street, sit on the beach or enjoy any meal without being hustled by someone to buy something, and most of all by someone asking to play his guitar or accordion. Two "musicians" could be playing for clients just tables apart, trying to outdo each other. Mexico is off our list for future travel.
