"Matilda" by Roald Dahl

Matilda Wormwood is a girl who teaches herself to read when she is 4 years old. Upon entering school, she's as smart as an adult. Matilda's biggest challenge at school is Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress who hates children.

My favorite part of the book is when Matilda learns she has the power to move things with her eyes and is able to overcome her fear of Miss Trunchbull with her new power. This is a very well-written book.

This story takes place in Nome, Alaska in 1925. Two children are very sick, and the medicine they need is in Anchorage, 800 miles away. The train bringing the medicine gets stuck in deep snow. They decide to use a dog sled relay to get the medicine. Balto runs for 20 straight hours and saves the children.
