A yearlong crackdown on the more than 80 businesses selling liquor in Compton was announced Friday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies said the enforcement and education program is being financed by a $100,000 grant from the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control.
Sheriff's Capt. Cecil Rhambo said that, for the first time, the Sheriff's Department will join with state and city officials to enforce alcoholic beverage laws.
"The goal is to educate the public and work together as a team to keep alcohol out of the hands of our youths and intoxicated drivers off the streets of Compton," he said.
He said officers will concentrate on licensee education, identification of noncompliant locations, enforcement of liquor laws and statistical tracking of related cases.
In 1997, Compton banned billboards advertising alcoholic beverages.
