Imprisoned Coup Leader Loses Seat in Parliament

December 09, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

A nationalist coup leader who went on to win a seat in Fiji's Parliament was dismissed from the legislature because he is in pretrial custody for last year's coup and cannot attend sessions.

George Speight, a failed businessman who helped topple the government in May 2000, was formally fired as a lawmaker by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Speight is being held on an island off the capital, Suva, awaiting trial early next year on treason charges related to the coup.
