Hueneme Claims Championship With Nine Advancing to Finals

February 04, 2001|From Staff Reports

Juan Albarran won at 135 pounds and Ralph Ramirez won at 185 pounds for Hueneme High on Saturday, which won its second Pacific View League championship in three years by advancing nine wrestlers to the finals.

The Vikings scored 165 points, Rio Mesa was second at 154 1/2 and Camarillo was third at 152 1/2 in the league meet, which usually does not determine the championship.

All three teams finished with 3-1 records in league dual meets.

Camarillo forced the tie by beating Rio Mesa on Tuesday, leaving the league finals to determine the champion.

Albarran defeated Lance Neal of Rio Mesa to claim the 135-pound title.

Ruiz won the 185-pound class when he beat Mike Dominguez of Rio Mesa.

Hueneme had five sophomores make the finals in the five lowest weight classes to help seal the championship.

Ralph Garcia of Camarillo, ranked No. 8 in the state at 189 pounds by wrestlereport.com and the defending Southern Section Division IV champion, defeated Chris Davis of Rio Mesa for the second time in one week to claim his second consecutive league championship.
