Why the Silky Qipao Remains a Classic

February 05, 2001

Ching-Ching Ni's article on the qipao ("Shanghai's in That Mood Again," Jan. 28) does not explain why the qipao is so attractive a feminine garment.

Until the last decade or so, the lack of proper nutrition caused most Chinese women to be quite slender, lacking curves. The tightfitting qipao displays the figure of the svelte wearer to best possible advantage.

The slit on the side of the qipao, whether ankle-length in Vietnam or a mini, displays tantalizing glimpses of thigh and leg. Viva la qipao!
