Say It for Less With a Budget Valentine Gift

February 09, 2001|GERI COOK | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Here are a few suggestions for buying a gift for your valentine:

At Duty Free, we found some great deals on many new perfumes. For women, a 3.4-ounce eau de toilette spray of Ungaro's Fleur de Diva that retails for $70 sells here for $35. Life Essence from Fendi, a fragrance for men, runs $95 retail for a 3.4-ounce spray but is $45 at Duty Free.

More than 3,000 different scents, all of them discounted, can be found in this newly expanded fragrance warehouse.

Duty Free, 15053 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. (818) 906-1234.

You can save big by skipping the flowers and buying a balloon bouquet at the Family Outlet in Granada Hills. For $4.99 you can get a dozen balloons, 11 red and white and one mylar. Valentine cards also are in stock at deep discounts.

Family Outlet, 11124 Balboa Blvd., Granada Hills, (818) 832-1367, and 11957 Parthenia, Northridge, (818) 701-0145.

In Burbank there's a treasure trove of costume jewelry, watches and handbags for women at about half the original prices at the 1928 Jewelry Outlet. Most of the inventory is their own product, but other manufacturers also are available.

Their Paris Vieux line of silver and blue stones or silver with topaz colored stones is half off, such as $12.50 for a necklace, $12 for earrings and $14.25 for a bracelet that originally sold for $28.50.

Some sterling bracelets with heart charms are $50, half the original $100. Watches by Guess and handbags from Nine West and Liz Claiborne all run 40% to 60% off their original prices.

1928 Jewelry Outlet, 3000 Empire St., Burbank. (818) 841-1928.

If candy is your valentine's weakness, Allen Wertz has a couple of outlet stores where they sell seconds. These are pieces where the decorators zigged when they should have zagged--think Lucy and Ethel on the assembly line. You'll find them selling for considerably less in the "Oops" department.

For a pound of "Oops" chocolates that regularly sells for $10.99, figure $3.99 in a bag or $4.99 boxed. Should there be any sugar-free chocolates left when you get there, these are $4.99 for a one-pound bag instead of $12.

Allen Wertz, 3195 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles. (323) 668-0123. Also at their plant in Chino, 5051 Edison Ave. (909) 613-0030.

Weekend Supersale: The Address, a top resale store for women's apparel, is having a major sale starting Saturday with top designer names selling for a fraction of their original prices. Check out the Fun Racks with all items priced at $30 and less.

The Address, 1116 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica. (310) 394-1406.

For Kids Only has added a 50% reduction to its already deeply discounted apparel for children from newborn to preteen. The reduction comes to about 75% on spiffy clothing from France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Shoes, too.

For Kids Only, 18155 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana. (818) 708-9543.
