City to Dedicate Veterans Memorial

February 11, 2001|CAROL CHAMBERS

The city of Palmdale plans to dedicate a new Veterans Memorial in a ceremony Monday at Poncitlan Square at the civic center.

The memorial, which features a plaque set in stone under a 20-by-30-foot American flag flying atop a 100-foot pole, cost $75,000, city officials said.

Veterans in conflicts from World War II through the Persian Gulf War are expected to be represented at the 10:30 a.m. ceremony, where state Sen. William J. "Pete" Knight (R-Palmdale) will speak, officials said.

"We are fortunate to have people up here who are willing to go to bat for the veterans," said Ray Croxen, chairman of the Antelope Valley Service Organization. The organization comprises more than 30 area service clubs and is a co-sponsor of the event. Croxen will serve as master of ceremonies.

The square is located at 38315 9th St. E.
