A 245-acre parcel of land between the city of Malibu and Ventura County has been purchased by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, officials said.
The property, known as "Little Sycamore," is next to Little Sycamore Canyon Road, north of Mulholland Highway. It was purchased for $2 million with funds from the county's voter-approved Proposition A park funds.
The land, which once was the site for a proposed 19-lot subdivision, is viewed as a critical link in the Backbone Trail, said Joel Bellman, a spokesman for county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. The trail stretches from Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades to Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County.
The parcel includes oak woodlands and a stream habitat. It eventually will be incorporated into either the state or national park system, Bellman said. The purchase, from a partnership that included a real estate investment company, was completed in December.
