Do you know what a proverb is?

A proverb is a short, often used saying that expresses a well-known truth or fact. For example: "Better late than never" means it's better to show up late than not to show up at all. Do you know any other proverbs or sayings? Look at today's "Question Corner" to see more examples.

The artist Judy Chicago has come up with an exhibit that is based on proverbs and sayings called "Resolutions: A Stitch in Time." The exhibit is at the Skirball Cultural Center through April 29.

Judy Chicago began taking art lessons at age 8. She later studied art at UCLA. She has influenced many female artists. For this show, she worked with a group of expert needleworkers from all over the country. The art focuses on seven basic values: family, responsibility, conservation, tolerance, human rights, hope and change. It is the artist's hope that by believing in and acting upon these values, we can help make the world a better place. All of the pieces in this exhibit required many hours of work on the part of everyone involved.

The work shown here is titled "The Hands That Rock the Cradle Shape the World." It took 3 1/2 years to complete. It is done in macrame (the decorative knotting of fibers), other stitches, paint, crochet and beads.

Think about what colors and designs you would use to describe a proverb or saying. Think of one and write it down on a piece of paper. Design your own work of art using markers, crayons, paint or colored pencils. Show it to your friends and family.

On Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. you can participate in Skirball's Family Art Project "Turn Over a New Leaf: A TuBishvat Celebration" and see the Judy Chicago exhibit. Reservations are suggested. Call (310) 440-4636 or visit http://www.skirball.org for more information.
