Padilla's Independence

February 18, 2001

I laughed out loud when I read in your political briefing column that Mayor Richard Riordan "appreciates" an "independent thinker" when referring to Councilman Alex Padilla ("Padilla Not Following Mayor's Lead in Races," Feb. 8).

I had to laugh because Riordan is attempting to buy the entire Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education to think, act and vote in his own image. Woe to those (Julie Korenstein and Valerie Fields) who have an independent thought.

The mayor's spokesperson states that the person running against Korenstein is "clearly the better candidate." What are his credentials? . . . Julie Korenstein, an educator, has a long record as a good and hard-working public servant who with word and action has helped and supported schoolchildren for years. Her crime according to the mayor? She also supports teachers!

As Councilman Padilla clearly understands: Julie Korenstein is without a doubt, clearly the better candidate.
