Tower of London Opens Restaurant

February 18, 2001

It took 900 years, but the Tower of London at last has a restaurant.

Located in the New Armouries building, the restaurant, opened earlier this month, has a self-serve buffet; an outdoor dining area with waiters is expected to open later. "International dishes" plus English tea with cake and biscuits are offered. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. (Digby Trout, the operator, runs cafes and caters at various London tourist sites, including Kensington Palace and the British Museum.) Also new at the Armouries: a banquet hall and conference facilities.

Although the Tower of London attracts about 2.4 million visitors a year, there hasn't until now been a restaurant on the site, a spokeswoman noted; instead, food carts and other services are clustered nearby.
