Bakery Has Same Sweet Smell--at a Lower Price

February 23, 2001|GERI COOK | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

We all know that buying bakery products at outlet stores is a way to save money. But the deals at the Entenmann's/Oroweat bakery outlets are even better than anticipated. The savings are up to 60% off retail and seem to hover around 40%, although some items are only 10% off.

On Sundays and Wednesdays, there's a minimum 50% off. Seniors save 10% daily. Of course, not all products are always available.

At the outlets you'll find goods from Old Country, Thomas, Northridge Farms and Boboli. If you're concerned about not getting fresh products, you should know bread has a shop life of seven days and the cakes and pastries seven to 10 days. The markets return the bread in three days, it reaches the outlet stores in four days--so there are still three fresh days left. The Entenmann's coffeecake lasts even longer.

Since it's nice to have a good supply of bakery goods on hand, you can pop several 4-day-old loaves of bread or a couple of 4-day-old coffeecakes into the freezer and not only save money but also a trip to the market. Your electric bill also may be lower because a full freezer uses less electricity.

Some of the bread loaves have a date printed on the wrapper, and everything with the current day's date is taken off the shelves at the outlets and sent to a food bank.

Entenmann's/Oroweat bakery outlets, 21423 Strathern, Canoga Park, (818) 348-9716, and 4324 W. Magnolia, Burbank, (818) 841-2832. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m; Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Cash only.
