Volunteer Vital English needs people to help non-English-speaking adults learn conversational English at various locations throughout San Gabriel and Pomona valleys. Training is provided. An orientation session will be held Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon in Montclair. Information: (909) 622-2453.

* Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy needs volunteers Jan. 14 to help restore native habitat for the birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife at the Chandler Preserve. Participants should meet at the Empty Saddle Club in Rolling Hills Estates at 9 a.m., and wear protective clothing, sturdy boots and hats. * 1736 Family Crisis Center, based in Redondo Beach, which offers shelter and counseling to battered women and their children, needs volunteers for its 24-hour hotline, to provide child care and to grocery-shop for the women at the shelter.
