The Darker Side of Fluoride

January 29, 2001

In "Keeping Pearly Whites in Working Order" (Jan. 15), Emily Dwass fails to mention that only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is recommended if the toothpaste contains the toxic substance fluoride.

So many cities now fluoridate their public water supplies, and overdoses of fluoride have ruined teeth with fluorosis and mottled enamel nationwide.

In my opinion, even adults should not be encouraged to swallow fluoride in the bathroom or kitchen or home or workplace, and the U.S. government and state and municipal governments should stop fluoridating public water until there is real and substantial evidence that drinking fluoridated water is beneficial.
